Big Basin Redwoods State Park
Alda and I drove to Ben Lomond, CA. so she could join Patricia and Glen at a Scottish Festival, then I went up to Big Basin Redwoods State Park for a day hike. The trail took me on a journey through old growth redwoods and three great waterfalls. Unfortunaly none of the waterfall photos turned out as expected. I guess now I will need to visit the park again.
At the visitors center they have a large cross section of a redwood tree on display. At the center there is a tag dating back to the year 500 and the edge near the bark there is tag dating to when the park was established in the year 1909. They used the rings of the tree to create a timeline including the rise of Myan civilization, Colombus discovering America, and the beginning of the California Gold Rush. It really puts into perspective the length of time this tree was alive. And it wasn’t as large as the trees still standing nearby! Imagine if an old growth redwood could speak. What would it say? I would imagine it would be quite wise after nearly 1500 years.
