Humboldt Redwoods State Park

Filed under:  — Jason Lustig @ 3:48 pm

I followed the Bull Creek Flats Trail on a leisurely stroll through the heart of virgin redwood forest. It was a 9.4 mile loop on a well maintained trail with only 400 feet of elevation gain.

Yosemite Falls

Filed under:  — Jason Lustig @ 5:43 pm

I had a fun and challenging hike yesterday to the top of Yosemite Falls and Yosemite Point with Paul, Brian, Howard, Richard, Michael, Karen, and Lisa.

We started at the Yosemite Falls Trailhead and climbed to the top of Yosemite Falls which is the fifth tallest waterfall in the world standing about 2,425 feet tall. We ate lunch then continued on to Yosemite Point. The trail to Yosemite Point was still covered in snow so we decided to take a more direct and steeper route to the point. Yosemite Point is about 3,280 feet above the trailhead only about 4 miles away. It’s like climbing a 328 story building! On our way back there was considerably more mist from the falls caused from the afternoon snow melt. After returning to the cars we got together and ate pizza for dinner in Curry Village.

Vernal Falls and Nevada Falls on the Mist Trail

Filed under:  — Jason Lustig @ 5:31 pm

Surprisingly, we were ready for more punishment this weekend. As a continuation of yesterdays Yosemite Falls hike, today our goal was the top of Nevada Falls about 1,900 feet in elevation gain in about 3.5 miles. On our way along the Mist Trail, we stopped frequently to take pictures of the stunning views. I had never been to Yosemite this early in the year and it was nice to get started with hardly anyone else around. It was a more enjoyable experience compared to the time I was in Yosemite during the summer when swarms of people were everywhere. Our first stop was at Vernal Falls standing about 317 feet tall. The falls were in full flow from the massive snow runoff and the mist created a full rainbow. At the top we took a break and enjoyed the moment. We then continued on to Nevada Falls which stands about 594 feet tall. The clouds let loose just as we were getting out lunch and we ended up eating lunch in the rain. As soon as we finished eating, the rain stopped and we got on our way back to the trailhead. We took the John Muir Trail back to the cars from Vernal Falls to avoid the steep stone staircases. It was a fun and challenging weekend and I hope to join this group on another hike soon.
